Syntactic representations encode grammatical functions: evidence from the priming of mapping between grammatical functions and thematic roles in Cantonese

چکیده

A structural priming study examined whether the mapping between grammatical functions (e.g. subject) and thematic roles agent) persists across utterances. Specifically, we tested native Cantonese speakers are more likely to produce a standard subject–verb–object (SVO) active or passive sentence after repeating an in object–subject–verb (OSV) order where direct object (i.e. patient) is grammatically marked as topic. Such Topic-OSV sentences share same agent–subject patient–direct mapping, but they differ all other important aspects including constituent structure, information linear role order. In contrast, only structure The results demonstrated that prime primed SVO actives rather than passives, suggesting function–thematic major source of priming. We thus argue our representations encode functions.

Evidence for Grammatical Functions in Tongan Workshop: Voice and Grammatical Functions in Austronesian

The theoretical analysis of Polynesian syntax has recently been in a state of some dormancy, particularly with respect to the issue of the role of grammatical functions. During the late 1960's and 1970's a considerable amount of attention was paid to the treatment of grammatical relations in Polynesian, which posed a number of interesting problems for syntactic theory from both a synchronic and...

Tagging Grammatical Functions

This paper addresses issues in automated treebank construction. We show how standard part-of-speech tagging techniques extend to the more general problem of structural annotation, especially for determining grammatical functions and syntactic categories. Annotation is viewed as an interactive process where manual and automatic processing alternate. Efficiency and accuracy results are presented....

Negative grammatical functions in Skou

Negation is known to correlate with changes of word order, agreement, or case marking in the clause. I present data from Skou, a language of north-central New Guinea, which show obliques and adjuncts appearing postverbally in the SOV positive clause and preverbally in negative clauses. Moreover, in addition to these changes in the order of constituents, the grammatical functions assigned in the...

Encoding Thematic Roles via Syntactic Functions in a German Treebank

One of the major purposes of annotated corpora is their potential for use as databases for linguistic research. An important design criterion for corpora specifically intended for this use is the need to encode a plurality of types of information, some of which are clearly interrelated. This need can conflict with the need to produce large corpora quickly, where the encoding of redundant inform...
